Rock legends may scrap London date | Music | Entertainment …
May 19th, 2012LOS ANGELES – A day after Van Halen abruptly postponed dozens of summer concert dates, there was no official word about the fate of the July 21 show at the John Labatt Centre.
A JLC representative said Friday afternoon the downtown London arena was awaiting word on the fate of the show. Official details were expected from tour promoters soon.
The U.S. rock band had postponed Thursday more than 30 concert dates of their North America summer tour, among them the July 21 stop in downtown London.
The band’s official website, van-halen.com, had taken down all its dates after June 26, listing only 15 more shows, ending in New Orleans. Closely watched fan site Van Halen News Desk said 31 dates had been postponed, starting on July 7 in Uncasville, Conn. and ending on Sept. 25 in Milwaukee, Wisc.
A spokeswoman for the group had no official statement about the postponements and declined further comment Thursday. The band began the current tour in mid-February.
The Rolling Stone website said a source with knowledge of the tour told the magazine, “the band is arguing like mad. They are fighting.” But that could not be confirmed and throughout its current tour there have been no public reports of the band mates arguing.
But if they are, it would not be the first time. Van Halen was among the biggest rock acts of the late 1970s and early 1980s with hits like Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love, Jump and Hot for Teacher.
But at the height of their fame, lead singer David Lee Roth had a falling out with the rest of the band members, and Sammy Hagar was brought in to join bothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony.

London airport queues 'depend on wind' – minister
May 16th, 2012LONDON (AFP) – Long waits to clear passport control at London Heathrow Airport can depend on which way the wind is blowing, Britain’s immigration minister said Tuesday.
Delays at the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic have triggered a furore in Britain as the clock ticks down to the July 27 opening of the London Olympics, for which Heathrow will be the main gateway.
Immigration Minister Damian Green said passengers from New York might well have to wait longer to go through if their flight arrives 10 minutes after one from Lagos in Nigeria rather than 10 minutes before.
“That will depend on the wind, over which, with the best will in the world, airlines and the Border Force don’t have the control,” he told the Home Affairs Committee, a parliamentary scrutiny panel made up of lawmakers.
BAA, the airport’s owner and operator, said some passengers had to wait up to three hours to get through Heathrow Terminal 4 last month.
Green said the queue lengths seen at some times of the day at Heathrow were “unacceptable”.
“This is a problem that we need to continue gripping.”
He said previous techniques for getting the queues down were not appropriate.
“The way in which queues had been mitigated over many years — five years or so — was to relax some checks in an unauthorised way when the queues got too big,” he said.
“So, in effect, we weren’t having risk-based controls: we were having queue-based controls.
“We are now taking the practical steps to address the issue of queues,” he said, on the basis that “the first priority absolutely has to be the security of our border”.

Vinyl From London Olympics Will Be Recycled for the 2014 World …
May 16th, 2012
While we weren’t thrilled to hear that the 2012 London Olympics would be using PVC to build many of their temporary structures, the good news is that the materials will be recycled for another big sporting event afterwards. Over 142,000 sq. m. of PVC fabric was incorporated into the construction of the park and external Olympic venues, including Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre, Hopkins Architects’ Velodrome, the Populous-designed Olympics Stadium and the Royal Artillery Barracks, but there is hope on the horizon because the developers of the Olympics have promised to do their part by recycling the vinyl after the games in new structures for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

A number of the 2012 Olympic venues were built using polyvinyl chloride (PVC or vinyl). To be fair, the material is durable, flexible, lightweight, inexpensive and customizable, but on the other hand, it doesn’t degrade, it’s hard to recycle, it produces toxic emissions and disrupts hormones. Because of its contentious nature, the London Olympic committee issued a policy back in 2009 to outline the use of vinyl at the venues. That policy dictated that any material used must include at least 30% recycled content, be manufactured in accordance with the ECVM Industry Charter, meet standards for effluent discharges and vent gases, and must not contain lead, mercury or cadmium stabilizers, amongst other things.
In addition, once the games conclude all temporary vinyl structures will be dismantled and the vinyl will be recycled. The recycling itself is slated to be done in the most sustainable way possible and involves a system of crushing, selective dissolving, fibre separation, PVC precipitation and solvent regeneration, all of which ensure that the product is high-quality recycled PVC that can be used again in a variety of ways with minimum negative impact on the environment. The recycled vinyl from the London 2012 Olympic Games venues will then be used for the football stadiums currently being designed and constructed for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. While we weren’t thrilled about the number of PVC structures going up for the Olympics, at least they’re working to recycle them into a new venue for the next major sporting event.
